Closing A Business
Closing a Withholding Account
You can close your withholding account by calling 410-260-7980 from Central Maryland, or 1-800-638-2937 from elsewhere, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Please be ready to provide the following information:
- Name
- Telephone Number
- Account number
- Reason for closing the account (out of business, no employees, etc.)
- Closing date
You can also close your account by completing and remitting the Final Report Form available in your withholding coupon booklet, or by completing Form MW506FR (PDF).
Closing a Sales and Use Tax Account
You can close your sales and use tax account by calling 410-260-7980 from Central Maryland, or 1-800-638-2937 from elsewhere, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Please be ready to provide the following information:
- Name
- Telephone Number
- Account number
- Reason for closing the account (out of business, no employees, etc.)
- Closing date
You can also close your account by completing and remitting the Final Report Form available in your sales and use tax coupon booklet, or by completing Form 202FR (PDF) and return with the final sales and use tax return.
Closing an Unemployment Insurance Account
You can close your unemployment tax account by calling 410-949-0022 from Central Maryland, or 1-800-827-4839 from elsewhere, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Closing a Corporation
You can close your corporation by visiting the Department of Assessments and Taxation website.
Close Your Alcohol, Tobacco, or Motor Fuel Accounts (if applicable)
If your business has any of the following permits, licenses, or accounts you are required to contact the appropriate office to close them.
Requests to close alcohol and non-retail tobacco licenses now go to the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Cannabis Commission (ATCC). Licensees can contact atcc.licensing@maryland.gov to learn next steps.
To close a Motor Fuel or International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) Account:
- An officer, member or partner must send a signed, written request on letterhead, which includes the account number to close the account.
