A new, secure way to file returns, make payments, and manage your Maryland personal income taxes online.

This is one of the most significant technology investments Maryland has made in a generation. Maryland's tax system has been running on the same aging infrastructure for more than 30 years -- technology that was never designed for transparency, security, or accessibility. This September 1, that changes.

Impact on Taxpayers

  • To complete this upgrade to Maryland Tax Connect, some services will be temporarily unavailable. If you have a payment due or a filing deadline approaching, take action before the dates shown above.

  • Payments made through “E-check” will remain operational during this migration period. This fast, easy, secure, and free method of payment directly debits from your bank account, and can be used to pay existing and estimated liabilities, as well as extension payments. Learn more at  MarylandComptroller.gov/Payments. Please note that electronic payments made during August 21-August 31 will be accepted and debited from bank accounts, but will not post until after Sept. 1.

  • If your due date falls during the migration period (when services are temporarily unavailable), the Comptroller’s Office will not assess penalties for payments that could not be made due to the system transition.

  • Between August 20 and August 31, our staff will have limited ability to provide tax status updates during this time. If you have questions or are in need of assistance during the transition, please reach out at 1-800-MDTAXES.

  • Stay tuned to this site for relevant updates and information as we migrate to the new tax processing system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Maryland Tax Connect for Individual Filers?

Maryland Tax Connect for Individual Filers is the Comptroller of Maryland's new online tax portal. Beginning September 1, 2026, individual taxpayers will be able to file returns, make payments, check refund status, view account information, access notices, and manage their Maryland tax obligations in one secure location.

The new portal replaces several legacy systems, including iFile and the current online bill payment system, and provides a more modern, user-friendly experience with enhanced self-service tools and real-time account information.

Why is the Comptroller’s Office launching Maryland Tax Connect?

Maryland’s core tax systems are more than 30 years old and have reached the end of their useful life.

Maryland Tax Connect replaces these aging systems with a modern tax administration platform that will improve security, simplify filing and payments, provide better access to account information, and deliver a more seamless experience for taxpayers. This investment will ensure the Comptroller’s Office can continue serving Marylanders efficiently for decades to come.

Why will some services be temporarily unavailable before the launch?

To successfully transition to Maryland Tax Connect, the Comptroller’s Office must migrate more than 4 billion tax records and transaction details from multiple legacy systems into the new platform.

To ensure the accuracy and security of taxpayer information, certain filing, payment, and account management functions must be temporarily suspended while data is transferred, validated, and tested. This planned transition period helps ensure Maryland Tax Connect is ready to serve taxpayers when it launches on September 1.

What services will be affected during the transition?

Beginning in late July and continuing through August, certain online filing, payment, and account management services will be temporarily unavailable as legacy systems are retired and Maryland Tax Connect is prepared for launch.

Specific service interruptions and deadlines vary by tax type. Taxpayers should review the Key Dates section for a complete schedule of affected services and important deadlines.

I have a tax payment due in August. What should I do?

If you need to make a payment through one of our legacy online systems, you should do so before the applicable deadline:

  • Individual income tax payments should be made by July 29, 2026.
  • Business tax payments should be made by August 20, 2026.

Taxpayers may continue to submit payments by e-check and credit card during the transition period. These payments will be accepted and funds may be debited from your account, but they will not appear in your Maryland tax account until after Maryland Tax Connect launches on September 1.

For additional payment options, visit MarylandComptroller.gov/Payments.

Will I still be able to make payments during the transition period?

Yes. E-check and credit card payments will continue to be available during the transition period.

Payments submitted during this time will be accepted and processed; however, due to system conversion activities, they may not be reflected in your Maryland tax account until after September 1, 2026.

Will I be penalized if a payment or filing deadline occurs during the transition?

If your due date falls during the outage window, no penalties will be assessed for payments that could not be made due to the system transition.

I make estimated tax payments. What should I know?

Estimated payment functionality through legacy systems will be available through August 20, 2026.

Taxpayers who normally make estimated payments online should plan to submit those payments before that date whenever possible.

E-check payments will continue to be accepted during the transition period, though they may not post to taxpayer accounts until after September 1. Full estimated payment functionality will resume when Maryland Tax Connect launches.

What happens if I mail a payment in by check after July 24th?

Due to our system modernization, we will not be able to process any mailed-in payments by check until after September 1. While no penalties will be assessed during this transition period, we strongly encourage taxpayers to use our E-check system. Learn more about the fee-free payment method by visiting MarylandComptroller.gov/Payments

Will I still be able to check my refund status or account information during the transition?

Some account-specific services, including refund status inquiries, account balances, payment history, and other taxpayer account information, may be unavailable during portions of the transition period.

Full access to these services will be restored when Maryland Tax Connect launches on September 1, 2026.

Who can I contact if I have questions during the transition?

Taxpayers can contact the Comptroller of Maryland at 1-800-MD-TAXES.

Please note that between August 18 and August 31, our staff will have limited access to taxpayer account information while systems are being transitioned to Maryland Tax Connect. During this time, representatives will remain available to answer general questions and provide guidance on filing requirements, payment options, forms, and the transition process.

Additional resources and updates will be available on the Maryland Tax Connect Information Hub.
